“So this is Christmas… And what have you done? Another year over. A new one just begun…”  Happy Christmas by John Lennon is played quite a bit on the radio these days… I got to thinking about the very first lyric and asked myself that same question: What have I done this past year? I realize the song is about more than just reflection of oneself and choices but I do think it’s a good question for all of us educators to think about as the year comes to a close. What have we done lately? What are we going to do this next year? How are we going to impact students? What efforts are we going to make to mentor and inform others in our profession? In what ways will we bridge the home-school gap and partner with families and the community? It’s a whole new year…. A fresh start. What are YOU going to do in 2011?

I teach fourth grade in the greater west valley of Phoenix. I am not one of those who have known since I was a little girl that I wanted to be a teacher. My parents aren’t in education so I couldn’t follow their footsteps. I don’t even remember many teachers from my childhood. Who inspired me to choose this profession? Well… I have two boys whom I love more than anything in the world. They are students in the 21st century.
