School Happens

We are now just over halfway through the school year and I realize no matter what we try to do, school happens.

Although we mindfully schedule monthly fire drills to minimize disruptions, we have no control over those days that the sensor trips and sets the alarm off and we have to wait on the play ground for the fire department to clear the building and give the okay to return.

Although we schedule teachers and staff members to assist with morning and afternoon duties, ensuring and maintaining safety for our students, we have no control over the car that hits the school bus parked at the corner alerting the police who shut down the road rerouting traffic all around the school.

Although we carefully place students into classes with teachers who will push on their thinking and nurture their soles, we have no control over teachers who resign mid year. We try to maintain normalcy and provide structure, but can we compensate so the students are not left wondering why?

Although we thoughtfully craft rules for student behavior in the cafeteria, we have no control the last Friday of the month when all students are given a chocolate birthday cupcake. Inevitably when the students leave the cafeteria, the floor is sprinkled with cupcake crumbs and bits of frosting.

Although teachers carefully plan rigorous and enriching lessons that make learning accessible for all students, we have no control over some students’ behaviors during full moon weeks.

Hello, my name is Jen Robinson. I have been in education for over 20 years. I began teaching in Buffalo, NY in 1992, as a pre-school special education teacher. My experience ranges from primary grades through high school. My husband and I moved to Arizona in 2001, where we were fortunate enough to teach at the same school. In 2004, I achieved National Board Certification and currently support candidates. In 2011 I completed my Ed.D. in Leadership and Innovation. My dissertation research focused on supporting National Board candidates through their certification process. During the 2012-2013 school year, I completed my National Board renewal process. It was humbling and very powerful to step back into a classroom. I am currently an elementary principal. I am excited and hopeful for the new school year. I also serve on the Arizona Teacher Solutions Team where we are solutions focused in an effort to transform and elevate the teaching profession.
